Any game or sport in which a ball is used during play is referred to as a ball game (or ballgame). Sports like football, cricket, baseball, basketball, and American football are among them. These games are generally of unrelated origins and have a variety of rules and histories. Ball games can be categorised into numerous major categories, and they typically aim to evaluate a player’s ability to strike the ball:

bat-and-ball sports, including baseball and cricket. These gauge the effectiveness of a hit by observing how far a player can run with the ball before an opponent can recover it.

Tennis, squash, and ball badminton are examples of racquet and ball games. These centre on players attempting to strike the ball to an opponent in a way that prevents the opponent from successfully returning the favour.

Games that involve hand and ball striking, such as four square and the numerous handball codes.
Sports with goals that are typically team sports, such basketball, water polo, all variations of football, lacrosse, and hockey (except ice hockey which is a goal sport but is played with a hockey puck). These are founded on the idea that players are divided into teams, each of which has a “goal” in its own designated area of the field. To score points, the ball is then driven into the goal of the opposing team.
sports that do not involve racquets, like volleyball and sepak takraw.

Sports requiring accuracy or target practise, such as golf, lawn bowls, croquet, and tennis, as well as cue sports like snooker, pool, and various varieties of billiards (the sport of curling, which uses a stone rather than a ball, is classified with target or precision sports for some purposes). These rely on striking the ball into a specific target or targets, and the effectiveness of the hit is typically gauged by how few hits are necessary to get the ball in or through the target (s).
