Research paper writing is one of the most important academic writing tasks that help the researcher to be known in the scientific society. Knowing which type of research paper will be the best for reporting findings on the topic of interest is necessary to ensure success. Thus, this article will discuss differences between the two most confusing types of research papers- argumentative research paper and persuasive research paper.

Argumentative research papers:

An argumentative research paper is the type of literary document that demands researchers to investigate facts, collect ideas, and generate evidence in order to convince a reader on a point of discussion. The topic of argumentative papers must raise an issue that needs to be proven by providing logical evidence; thus, an extensive review of literature is required to draft such papers.

As a matter of course, the argumentative paper must start from some controversial topic, and it provides authors complete freedom to either establish a balanced discussion showing both sides of a picture or take a position on one side and provide evidence to make it valid. Even though the argumentative research paper can be divided into three major types, namely, classical argumentative, Rogerian argumentative, and Toulmin argumentative:

1. Classical argumentative:

This is the oldest type of argumentative essay model developed by Aristotle. This model suggests authors write an argumentative essay by introducing the claim, stating the writer’s opinion, either biased or balanced, using the supporting information to prove the claim, and providing a conclusion to give a better perspective.

2. Rogerian argumentative:

This model was developed by Carl Rogers, and it suggests an entirely different format for drafting an argumentative paper. Following this model, a writer can introduce different perspectives simultaneously and simply by providing evidence for each he can move on to the conclusion to present a new perspective. 3. Toulmin argumentative:

Toulmin’s argumentative model was developed by Stephen Toulmin. This is the most effective model for drafting an argumentative research paper that can best meet the international research standards. It suggests researchers include five vital components such as claim, warrant, backing, qualifier, and rebuttal to develop good arguments.

According to this model, an argumentative paper’s introduction must include the main claim, the body must contain all supporting details including evidence, warrant, backup, and qualifier, the rebuttal must include the counter-arguments, and the last part conclusion must include the key points or end results extracted in the light of the evidence.

Persuasive research papers:

Persuasive papers help researchers to persuade readers by making the content attractive, eye-catching, and entertaining. The purpose of such a paper is to make an attempt to agree the reader with author’s point of view. To make persuasive content, writers can use a number of approaches such as emotions, sentiments, public interest, and problem that the targeted audience is supposed to be passed through.

All in all, the literary document is drafted with the purpose of presenting a logical argument with an emotional appeal so the audience can easily agree with the raised points or points of discussion. Like an argumentative research paper, the persuasive research paper also comprises three main elements: ethos, pathos, and logos.

  1. Ethos: Ethos is a structural element of persuasive papers that allows researchers to depict their credibility and knowledge in the light of the fact that ‘readers are more likely to trust an author with credible knowledge and personal exposure’. All in all, ethos helps authors to be trusted by readers.
  2. Pathos:  Pathos is the appealing words that make to evoke the audience’s emotions and feelings. Making a good emotional connection with the audience helps a reader to convince them of a point of view.
  3. Lagos: It is therhetorical or persuasive appeal to connect the audience’s rationality and logic. A good persuasive writer offers a long list of valid pieces of information or logics so that reader can believe the writer’s arguments.

Based on these elements, the persuasive essay can be drafted in three ways: by appealing to ethos, appealing to logos, and by appealing to pathos.

4. Similarities between the argumentative research paper and persuasive paper:

The argumentative research paper and the persuasive research paper have few overarching points. The longer goal of both types of papers is to present a point of view by using logical reasoning. They both aim to clear the author’s position in front of an audience by developing arguments, giving supporting details, and extracting conclusions based on the supporting details.

5. Differences between the argumentative research paper and persuasive paper:

Even though the argumentative research paper and persuasive papers have few similarities but still they both belong to two different categories of essays. They both are different based on goals, general techniques, audience, and attitude. The goal of argumentative writing is to acknowledge that a given side is valid and deserves attention, while persuasive writing aims to get the reader to agree with a writer either logically or emotionally.

The general technique for argumentative writing is to present all relevant reasons, facts, and evidence to make a discussion valid, whereas the persuasive writing technique includes the perfect blending of facts and emotions to convince the audience of a point. Argumentative writing does not always need the audience to agree on a point, while persuasive writing needs a reader to agree by hook and crook. The attitude of argumentative writing is simply to present an idea in front of an audience with the expectation that the audience will consider it noteworthy or logical. In contrast, the attitude of persuasive writing is to gain the public vote by giving more personal, more emotional, and more passionate points of discussion.

Final Thoughts:

In the big picture, we can come to the point that ‘yes’, argumentative research paper and persuasive papers are two different types of writing that have some similarities, but the distinguishing factors between the two are far greater than the similarities. Argumentative writing helps researchers to talk about the decided side on the controversial topic. Instead, the persuasive writing tries to convince the reader either by appealing to ethos, pathos, or logos.
